permitting spotlight

It’s 2017, and let’s face it, the permitting process throughout the United States keeps getting more and more complicated. That’s why we make it easier for you to get the permit you need for your warehouse.

Ultimately, getting a warehouse operation up and running takes a lot of time and effort. The last thing that you need is more work to do, so why not let us take on that task? Our teams have extensive experience in dealing with municipalities nationwide, understanding documentation requirements and walking a permit through from a project inception to the final inspection.

Above all, our goal is to be a turnkey partner for all of your racking and storage needs. While permitting is becoming more and more prevalent on projects throughout the country, why not choose us as your collaborator through the process?

Is the deal too good to be true?

Everyone loves a good deal, but nobody likes unpleasant surprises. As consumers, we are always trying to save money while still getting the most bang for our buck.  It’s part of a good business strategy.  However, it’s also important to remember that if something looks too good to be true; it probably is.

We recently had a customer who thought they were getting a good deal, but instead ended up with a very nasty surprise. This customer ordered some pallet rack from another supplier at a very low cost point. The customer planned to install the pallet rack themselves but had NO IDEA how much work that would be. When the pallet rack arrived they only received the various deconstructed components to make the upright frames, instead of assembled uprights as they had expected. (see photo)

Deal too good to be true?

Some equipment providers may cut corners to provide customers with the lowest cost point. As a customer, this can be dangerous financially and structurally if you don’t fully understand what you’re getting when you sign on the dotted line.

At Storage Solutions, we only work with top quality equipment manufacturers for our new equipment & promise to never leave our customers with this type of unpleasant surprise. If you purchase used equipment from us you can do so with the knowledge that we only bring in the highest quality pre-owned equipment & it is stored indoors and out of the elements. When you purchase from us, you can do so with the knowledge that you will get what you’re promised, and what you pay for.

What To Look For:

  • Prices that are unbelievably low sometimes means product quality is low for new equipment or product condition is less than desirable for used equipment
  • Suspiciously low prices may also mean product features are missing (ie. assembled uprights) or specs & capacities won’t meet your expectations
  • RMI product certification shows that the product has been tested & is in accordance with current building codes & safety standards – if the product is not RMI certified it is not from a quality equipment manufacturer & doesn’t meet any current building code.

used equipment - beams

At Storage Solutions, we know how hard it can be to find the right used equipment for your space. That is why we are always on the lookout for good quality material to house in our 350,000 sq. ft. facility headquartered in Central Indiana. Each item has to pass a rigorous inspection, and is then stored inside a climate controlled facility. The goal is to save our customers money with buying used without having to sacrifice quality.

Recent Warehouse Update:

In an effort to open up even more space for used equipment, we recently tore down 321 bays of rack in our own warehouse to free up more floor storage! Storage Solutions is constantly looking for ways to expand our inventory so we always have what our customers are looking for.

storage solutions omni channel

The world of E-commerce/Omni Channel is popular. Very popular.
You’d have to be living under a rock not to notice the trend of online ordering over the past decade, but you may be surprised to know how popular it’s really become.
In 2014, Amazon became the first top-ten US retailer without a bricks-and-mortar store. It’s also averaged 30% growth since 2006. Pretty impressive, but they’re not alone.
In the US, online-only retailers are outgrowing their bricks-and-mortar colleagues by more than 62%.
This coming of age has brought new heights of choice and convenience to the consumer, but has wrought havoc and headache for distribution centers that have undergone major change to keep up with them.

For Part 1 of this blog, we covered the different components of pallet rack and how to determine which type you need for your operation. Part 2 is going to cover the different types of pallet rack systems!

pallet rack

Types of Pallet Rack:

Selective

  • Most common pallet rack used
  • Efficient when you have a low quantity of SKUs
  • Easy accessibility
  • Least dense

Double Deep

  • Fewer forklift aisles
  • Less selectivity
  • More storage density than selective rack

Drive In

  • Load and retrieve from the same side, creating LIFO inventory retrieval
  • Efficient when you have large quantities of different SKUs
  • Low selectivity
  • Cost effective
  • High density
  • Requires fewer forklift aisles

Push Back

  • Similar to drive in
  • Allows you to store pallets 2-5 deep and still have easy access to different SKUs
  • This system uses steel carts on inclined rails, and uses gravity flow to move product towards the pick aisles
  • Cost effective
  • High density
  • LIFO

Drive Thru

  • Pallet racking system that loads from one side and unloads from the other to create FIFO inventory retrieval.
  • Forklifts can enter from both aisles on either side of the rack
  • Low selectivity
  • High density
  • Excellent option for freezers

Pallet Flow

  • Similar to drive thru
  • This system uses wheels or rollers on sloped beam levels, and uses gravity flow to move product towards the pick aisle
  • It is perfect for fast-moving product with FIFO inventory retrieval
  • High-density

Carton Flow

  • Uses a gravity feed rear load design
  • Merchandise is loaded in the rear of each runway, and as an item is removed from the front, the item behind it slides forward on inclined rails in place of the previous item
  • FIFO

Cantilever

  • Elongated storage, furniture rack, tube rack, lumber rack
  • Single sided or double sided
  • Various heights and widths between uprights and lengths of the arms
  • High selectivity
  • Can use decking to span arms to create a solid level
