Engineering Consultation Services for a New Facility

The Situation

A longtime client in the manufacturing industry approached us after they developed a new product line and acquired a new facility in the Midwest. Our client hoped to relieve storage and distribution stress on their other manufacturing sites with the new facility, but they were unsure of which storage methods were appropriate for their new line and looked to Storage Solutions to provide our expertise.

Where Storage Solutions Came In

Our client’s most significant pain point was understanding how best to solve their need for efficiently moving products while still maximizing the facility’s storage with a new product line. Although the client did not have all the data necessary for a complete analysis, our Solutions Engineering team was able to use real-world operations experience and industry knowledge to fill in the gaps.

While developing a project roadmap, our Solutions Engineering and National Accounts teams enlisted our partners to provide options, including a mix of storage and dynamic solutions, with a plan to achieve a financial return from these capital expenditures. For this project, the options included VNA single selective rackdense storagepallet shuttles, and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). We also provided estimates on equipment and labor installation time and how alternate layouts could affect their future labor costs with additional throughput.

The Results

After presenting multiple options ranging in cost, our client’s decision landed somewhere in the middle. They chose a solution that fit their long-term goals and would not require them to build a new warehouse faster than necessary. With our real-world operations knowledge, we were able to present a combination of products within a design that fit the current and future needs of our client. Ultimately, Storage Solutions worked to design & install the following, allowing our client to achieve labor savings of $625,000 per year. By factoring in their needs and intimately understanding the challenges of constructing a new warehouse, we helped them reach the best decision for their business.
