Pallet Rack Pushback Dense Solutions

Want to learn more about the pallet racks that we store in our 330,000 square foot warehouse in Westfield, IN? Keep reading to learn about our products and what our team can do for you!

There are four main components of pallet racks. Those components are uprights, beams, pallet supports or wire decking, and row spacers. These are always kept in stock at Storage Solutions. Moreover, they can be used with different pallet rack designs.

There are also four different types of pallet rack construction/connection types. The most common type is roll-formed pallet rack, which is typically manufactured in “teardrop” style and has a rivet connection where the beams connect to the upright. Another type is structural pallet rack, which is made of thicker steel c-channels and the beams are always bolted to the upright.

Rack Types and Designs

Here at Storage Solutions, we stock different pallet rack types and designs. These different pallet racks can serve many purposes throughout your warehouse.

Some of the rack types include selective pallet rack. This is the most common pallet rack used, it has low density but high selectivity(accessibility to each item). In addition, we also stock the double-deep pallet rack, which is constructed back-to-back to allow for higher storage density, utilizing fewer forklift aisles. Another design is push-back pallet rack, which uses gravity flow and inclined rails to make the placement and retrieval of pallets easy.

Drive-in/drive-thru pallet rack has a high density and low selectivity which allows for fewer forklift aisles. Forklifts can drive directly into the rack to drop off and pick up pallets. In addition, we also stock pallet flow rack. This design, which is driven by gravity, is equipped with wheels on sloped rails. This unique design allows the pallets to flow forward from the entry side of the rack to the opposite side of the rack for picking. The cantilever rack utilizes cantilevered arms to store long and narrow items.

We are always looking for used equipment!  So why not let us pay you for your unwanted/unneeded materials?

Storage Solutions is your partner when it comes to buying used equipment.  We want to help you move your old, unused materials for a competitive price.

While we appreciate the opportunity to buy any used equipment, there are a few things that we really need on an ongoing basis.

Teardrop Uprights

Uprights are our one of our most popular products at Storage Solutions. Because of that, quality uprights are always in high demand.

Teardrop beams

8′ beams are the most common, so we are always on the lookout for them.  As an integral part to nearly every project, we like to have quality beams in inventory at all times.

Wire Decking

Why Wire Decking? At Storage Solutions, we prefer to use wire decking for a number of reasons.  Since safety is paramount for us, wire decking is much better for fire code compared to the traditional wood pallets.  They are also more cost effective and they drop right into place, making installation a breeze.

At Storage Solutions, we know how hard it can be to find the right used equipment for your space. That is why we are always on the lookout for good quality material to house in our 350,000 sq. ft. facility headquartered in Central Indiana. Each item has to pass a rigorous inspection, and is then stored inside a climate controlled facility. The goal is to save our customers money with buying used without having to sacrifice quality.

Recent Warehouse Update:

In an effort to open up even more space for used equipment, we recently tore down 321 bays of rack in our own warehouse to free up more floor storage! Storage Solutions is constantly looking for ways to expand our inventory so we always have what our customers are looking for.

To put it simply, it depends! Lots of factors come in to play when deciding what storage system best suits your operation.

Pallet Rack

  1. Cost
  2. Size of the facility
  3. Clear height of the facility’s ceiling
  4. What type of product is being stored
  5. What size pallets are used
  6. What is the product turn around
  7. What type of fork lift truck is being used

Over the next few weeks we are going to dig a little deeper in to the components of pallet rack and the different types. Knowing this information can help you determine what solution will work best in your facility. To start us off…components.

Pallet Rack 101:

Roll Formed and Structural

Roll formed pallet rack is the most common construction of racking.  It is usually manufactured in the “teardrop” style; teardrop referring to the teardrop shaped holes on the column of the uprights.  It is cold rolled and typically has a rivet connection.  There are few circumstances when roll formed has a bolted connection. This type of pallet rack also tends to be less expensive because it is made up of less steel than structural. Roll formed uses mounting clips that can easily be adjusted to different heights according to load size, which is beneficial for warehouses that store a wide variety of product sizes.

Structural pallet rack is hot rolled.  Its components are almost always bolted together which is how one can easily spot structural versus roll formed pallet rack. The horizontal load beams connect to the uprights with bolts which increases the rack’s weight bearing capacity.  Structural pallet rack is made of thicker steel c-channels, making it the more expensive but durable pallet rack option.  It is most commonly used in warehouses where inventory has a quick turnover because durability is a huge factor when accommodating busy forklift traffic.

Uprights

  • Vertical bracing columns
  • Depth determined by product size
  • Height determined by clear height in building and forklift capabilities
  • Column size determined by capacity needed
  • Capacity of uprights determined by spacing of beams – spacing beams far apart can create bends in the uprights, closer together makes it stronger
  • Gauge determined by capacity needed

Beams

  • Horizontal load supports
  • Length determined by product size
  • Height determined by capacity needed
  • Gauge determined by capacity needed – lower gauge means thicker steel and higher capacity
  • Deflection in beams is how much the beam is designed to bend – deflection is normal!

Row Spacers

  • Flue space connector
  • Layout determines length of row spacer
  • Length determined by flue space dimensions
  • Type determined by upright to be connected to
  • Some row spacers are not interchangeable so be aware when selling used equipment

Pallet Supports

  • Load supports connecting front and back beams
  • Length determined by depth of upright
  • Style and gauge determined by capacity needed

Wire Decking

Wire decking is used in pallet rack and other types of storage rack. Made from steel wire, wire decking gives you the flexibility to store a variety of pallet sizes.  It provides a solid surface while also maintaining an open surface which improves fire safety by enhancing the performance of your overhead sprinkler system. Wire decking is easy to install and is maintenance free.
