Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors, also known as VRCs, move equipment from one level to another. They can move efficiently to a mezzanine, rack/shelving storage system with catwalks, or a new/existing upper floor level. In addition, they are classified as a material conveyor, and the operators do not need OSHA forklift training. They can also transfer pallet loads, carts and boxes that may not fit on a forklift.

Other benefits to VRCs include:

  • Safe to operate
  • Less costly to operate and maintain compared to elevators and forklifts
  • Adjusts to your specific load (height, speed requirements)

Storage Solutions Re-Term of the Week: Pallet Rack

pallet rackFor those of you that don’t know, yesterday, Sunday, June 3rd was National Repeat Day (yes, I said Repeat Day). National Repeat Day is a day for everyone to go out and do the things they love over again.  Go fishing for two hours instead of one, ride your bike in the morning then again in the evening, or eat your favorite dessert twice!

Well, one thing we love here at Storage Solutions is pallet rack, so to celebrate Repeat Day we are re-posting a previous Term of the Week blog.

This week’s re-term of the week is Pallet Rack!

Pallet rack is a structural storage system that is used to support high stacking of items or palletized loads. This storage system is designed to store materials on pallets.

There are many types of pallet racking but all types allow for the storage of palletized materials. In order to use the pallet rack system you need to have access to forklift trucks so that you can place the loaded pallets onto the racks for storage. Pallet racks are an essential element in most modern warehouses, manufacturing facilities, retail centers, and other storage and distribution facilities.

Teardrop Pallet Rack

Teardrop Pallet RackTeardrop pallet rack is constructed of cold rolled steel commonly referred to as roll formed. This racking structure involves an upright with open holes on its’ face that are the shape of a teardrop along with beams that have connectors with rivets that slide and lock into place on the uprights. This type of design allows for the simple connection of beams and uprights.  Most types of teardrop rack utilize a spring activated safety lock to prevent the beam from dislodging from the upright during loading and/or unloading.

Almost every manufacturer of roll formed pallet racking has a teardrop design. The designs across the various manufacturers have slight differences and variations, but for the most part are interchangeable and compatible. Therefore, when a customer has existing teardrop racking in their facility they are not often restricted to only one manufacturers design of pallet racking when the need arises to add additional racking to their facility. The teardrop design of racking is the most interchangeable equipment across manufacturers in the industry which is why it is used by most customers in the marketplace.

Teardrop racking can be used in a variety of storage facilities such as garages, offices, storage rooms, warehouses, etc. It can also be manufactured to any size that fits the need of the customers products, and is available in a wide spectrum of colors.

  • Compatible with most existing teardrop racking
  • Spring activated safety lock on most designs
  • Economical compared to the heavier design of structural racking

Storage Solutions Term of the Week: Carousel Storage Systems

Carousel Storage Systems

There are two main types of Carousel Storage Systems that we use here at Storage Solutions. The first is Lektriever which is used for light duty projects. Lektriever allows one person to do the filing and the materials that would normally take 3 people to do. This is a very simple system it centralizes your storage in one small space so you don’t have to waste time looking through cabinets or shelving. Its rotating shelves deliver your times quickly and efficiently. By using the Lektriever it reduces the amount of floor space devoted to filing and storage.

carouselThe second type of Carousel Storage System is Industriever which is used for more heavy duty projects. Industriever allows customers to simply enter the part into a computer and then the shelves with rotate delivering the desired item to the operator.  Some features to the Industriever include a 650 pound maximum load capacity per carrier or shelf, four point tracking for maximum support, lockable doors and infra-red safety eyes to keep the carriers from rotating when parts are being taken out.

This structure is designed to maximize space under and above it which creates additional space for storage or offices. These are extremely durable structures; they are designed to sustain heavy loads. It is usually engineered for specific needs. These are great for creating other levels using your existing space; if you need more space allow mezzanines to build up instead of out.

Term of the Week: Push Back Pallet Rack

TOTW PushbackA  push back pallet rack system allows palletized goods and materials to be stored by being pushed up a gently graded ramp. Stored materials are allowed to flow down the ramp to the aisle.

This rack configuration allows for deep storage at each rack level and last-in, first-out storage. All of the loads are stored and retrieved from the aisle. When a new load is deposited into a lane, it pushes back the one already at the front and all those behind it. Then, when that load is picked, the contents of the lane all move forward again, hence the term “push back rack.”

Why use a push back pallet rack system?

  • The nested carts make placement and retrieval easy
  • It saves storage space which leads to less cost
  • They offer the same storage density as and drive-in/drive-through racks

This Week’s Term Of The Week:  Wire Decking

Wire decking is used in pallet rack and other types of storage rack. Made from galvanized steel, wire decking enables you to store a wider variety of items. This aspect of pallet racking also protects against falling inventory that may result from pallet bundlers or damaged/misplaced pallets.

Wire DeckingThe rack is created with welded wire mesh with integrated support channels that are welded to the bottom of the span that is between the rack beams and carries the load. It can be created to accommodate any depth of rack or beam length. It can also be designed/built for a range of load bearing capacities.

Term Of The Week: Dock Leveler

This is a manually, hydraulically, or electrically operated plate that is located at the dock entrance. This leveler can be raised and lowered to accommodate varying trailer floor heights. These are important because they enhance safety and productivity on the dock through design features.

Some examples of dock levels are: standard pull-chain mechanical dock leveler, hydraulic dock leveler and a dock leveler with a safety barrier. Here at Storage-Solutions we use these on our own docks for safety and convenience.

Term Of The Week: Cantilever Rack

Cantilever Rack

CantileverCantilever rack is a rack that utilizes “cantilevered” arms that stick out from columns.  These long projecting beams are fixed on one end and open on the other. They are often used to store long, narrow items.  As one of our Specialty Solutions, it is perfect for the storage of oddly shaped items.

Cantilever racks replace shelving when there is a need for a full, clear shelf. These racks also offer the ability to load items from the front, without obstruction from rack support uprights.

Typically, this type of racking is easy to install and reconfigure shelving heights. Because of its design, it is perfect for atypically sized materials.

Cantilever racks are the perfect storage solution for hard-to-store products such as pallet rack beams, furniture, lumber, steel piping, tubs, and more.   These units are often installed with recessed decking on beds to provide a surface that eliminates snags and other damage incurred during handling. Load capacities vary by arm and overall unit capabilities.
