Rivet Shelving Steel Shelving

Rivet Shelving or Steel Shelving: Which is Right for Me?

In most cases, shelving should be used as a simple storage solution in situations where you are looking for storage for individual case picking or each picking. In addition, shelving works well when associates are not picking entire cases, but rather individual pieces. Shelving also is ideal for picking situations in which a warehouse associate needs a high number of pick faces to keep their products separated, organized, and easily identifiable.

While both rivet shelving and steel shelving solve the simple storage need for “less than a case” picking situations, each of the warehouse shelving options has its strengths and weaknesses. For those evaluating the right option or mix for their warehouse, let us explain the differences so you may better determine the best fit for your storage needs.

When to Use Steel Shelving

Industrial steel shelving, otherwise known as “clip shelving,” is ideal for storage situations in which accessories like drawer units, dividers, cabinet doors, etc., may be needed to separate and organize products. This style of shelving is popular because it is easily reconfigurable, akin to an “erector set” for storage. This option can genuinely be customized to fit the needs of your picking process. Steel clip shelving also typically provides more weight capacity per square foot of shelf space than other types of shelving.

When to Use Rivet Shelving

Industrial rivet shelving is a simple storage solution for case picking situations in which bulk shelving is required to store cases of products. The design of the rivet shelving unit inherently does not require hardware like nuts and bolts; the rivets on the shelving beams slide and lock into place when connected to their corresponding uprights. Due to its design, rivet shelving provides more & bigger size options than steel clip shelving. Typically, particle board or wire decking sits upon the beams and uprights to create a surface for storage. However, in recent years safety regulators have been pushing for more use of wire decking due to safety and flammability concerns.

Well… That’s just not true.  Storage Solutions prides itself on the fact that we have skilled installation crews who are constantly going the distance. Literally.

It may not be an Oscar, but we’re pretty excited to have recently been awarded the Nashville Wire 2010 Premiere Dealer Award!  We take a lot of pride in our partnerships, and Nashville Wire has been a consistently positive one since the beginning.  We got on the phone with Nashville Wire’s Vice President of Sales, Steve Johnson, to find out why Storage Solutions received this award and what role our partnership plays in their company’s success.

Nashville Wire

According to Steve, there were three main criteria required for a company to be considered for this award:

nashville wire decking

  • Sales Volume
  • Communication
  • Professionalism

“Obviously sales volume is an important characteristic when it comes to these things,” Johnson said.  “In 2010, Storage Solutions far surpassed other partners in promoting Nashville Wire products.”

Over the years, we have prided ourselves on the fact that our teamwork, customer service and start-to-finish attention to detail parallels no other material handling company. According to Johnson, “Storage Solutions has consistently kept a great communication record,” from engineering, to quoting and lead follow-up.

“The professionalism from the beinning of the quoting process through the last step of the installation has been tremendous,” Johnson said.  “Everything in there is flawless.  [The] support staff makes the difference for your sales team.”

Partnerships mean so much to the success of our business.  Are you looking to partner with a material handling company for a project or series of projects?  We’ve got the kind of experience and customer service it takes to establish a long and fruitful business relationship.  Give us a call at 866.474.2001!

When it comes to the material handling industry, it can often times be difficult to keep up with the terminology we use from day to day.  We have decided to start posting a Term Of The Week to break it down in terms everyone can understand.

This week’s Term Of The Week:

Selective Pallet RackSELECTIVE RACK

Standard selective pallet rack is designed for the purpose of the bulk storage of palletized goods and equipment.  All types of pallet racking create some level of increase in storage density, storing materials in horizontal bays.  Pallet rack is an essential and ever-present element in most modern warehouse, manufacturing facilities, retail centers and other storage and distribution facilities.

Elements of Selective Rack:

  • Pallet Rack Uprights – the vertical pieces of these storage units, which are typically anchored to the floor and provide the support for the racking system.
  • Pallet Rack Beams – clip into the uprights and provide the horizontal support in these units.
  • Wire Decks – are the final element of these units, which sit on top of the beams and create the sheld that the pallets and/or goods sit on.

SPRING IS HERE!  Well… it was.  And then temperatures dropped 40 degrees and now we’re freezing again.  But we’ve got faith that warmer weather is headed our way again any day now.  Along with spring’s arrival, we as a company have decided to take a hard look at what it means to be green and take the environment into consideration as we head into warmer months.

Storage Solutions GreenWhen it comes to going green, not only do we look to make greener decisions within our daily office functions (we’re talking more emails, recycling paper goods, ride sharing and fewer printouts), but we also pride ourselves on providing customers with opportunities to make more environmentaly-friendly business decisions.

What Are We Doing?

There are plenty of ways, both large and small, that we are aiming to contribute to having a more positive impact on the world.

  • Shipping Via Railway
  • Selling USED equipment
  • Ride-Sharing To And From Project Sites
  • Recycling Paper Products
  • Print Less, Email More

SHIPPING VIA RAILWAY

While it is certainly not always going to be the cheapest option, rail cars can provide a very competitive price for some shipments.  Storage Solutions has managed to save companies thousands of dollars on freight costs by shipping via rail. Check out our previous blog posting for more info on the benefits of shipping via railway.

  • Railroads are three times more fuel-efficient than trucks
  • Railcars move freight without clogging freeways
  • Railcars emit only 2.6% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emmissions, while truck account for 21% of that total

Selling Used Equipment

Purchasing pre-owned equipment is the most surefire way to have a positive impact on recycling. While companies often shy away from the “used” label on some steel products, used pallet rack can be just as effective albeit more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly.  Check out a previous blog posting on the benefits of buying used equipment.

As far as the rest goes, we’re constantly looking for additional ways in which we can lessen our impact on the environment.  Using less paper, increasing our reliance on technology as a main way to communicate, sharing rides to and from job sites nationwide and more are way in which we are trying to do our part to be an environmentally-conscious company.
