Truck Driver Appreciation Week

Truck drivers play a key role in the logistics side of our business. Without them, we would have no way to get shipments from Point A to Point B. Because of this, we were more than ecstatic to celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week from September 9th through the 15th.

Logistics is an integral part of the material handling industry, nobody knows that better than our Logistics Manager, Brenda Dudley.

“For material handling and specifically what we do at Storage Solutions, service needs are indicative of “just in time” performance. With build schedules, crews on site and customer timelines, we can’t deliver too early or too late but within a window delivery plan. We depend and rely on the abilities of the drivers to honor our own commitments to our customers. Let’s not forget that drivers on-site at a customer’s facility are an extension of who and what we are as a company. They represent us while handling our shipments and can make or break customer relationships. It’s easy to overlook the hard work and effort most drivers put forth and we tend to think that they need business to keep the wheels turning, when in fact, we need them just as much.”

We send and receive around fifteen shipments every day, going to and coming from all over the continental United States. These drivers put in long, grueling hours every day to ensure shipments arrive on time. That often means time away from family and friends, along with the comfort of home.

This is why we dedicate this week to them. So if you see any truck drivers, be sure to thank them for their hard work! It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed here at Storage Solutions.

With a rapidly changing industry, Storage Solutions wants to make sure that we are always up-to-date with the latest trends and business opportunities ahead of us. Our Vice President of Operations, Nathan Storey, saw an opportunity that would help Storage Solutions meet and exceed this goal, which led him to attend the 63rd Annual MHEDA Convention.

Vertical Lift Modules

Vertical Lift Machines (VLMs) are the automation solution that could bring your operation to the next level. Automation is, of course, becoming necessary in modern facilities, making VLMs the perfect solution to add to your operation.

VLMs are a “goods to man” picking solution that allows users to pick orders efficiently while optimizing space utilization within a facility. Its internal software allows this seemingly complex machine to be one of the most user-friendly tools in your warehouse.

As an extremely customizable machine, VLMs can be catered to your every need. Their location sizes can be easily adjusted “on the fly”, and their functionality takes all the guesswork out of it, maximizing pick accuracy. In addition, the extremely high pick rates and space utilization will lead to labor savings and increased revenue. With its ability to move up to 120 trays per hour, multiple machines can be grouped for maximum efficiency.

Finally, VLMs can be an integral part in decreasing your footprint in your facility. For example, in a recent project, adding VLMs to the facility decreased our customer’s footprint from 5,000 square feet to 150. That’s over a 90% increase in space for other necessary equipment.

With so many fresh, new faces in the office I thought it was necessary to use today’s blog as an opportunity to check in with one of our new team members and see what his experience has been like with us thus far! Making his Storage Solutions blogging debut, I give you, Billy Powers!

——

Storage SolutionsI was recently asked to explain what my typical day looks like at Storage Solutions. I have been with the company for a little over two months now, and I can honestly say there is no typical work day; every day is different, every phone call provides me with a new and different challenge and every project I am exposed to is different than the last. If my day ever becomes typical or routine, you should assume I am not pushing myself or have stopped learning new things, which is far from possible.

In the material handling industry, there are always opportunities to learn new things. When I first started at Storage Solutions I was told to surround myself with the “all stars” in the office. Without a doubt, everyone in this office is an all star and are willing to help the “rookie” in the office. Every day the project managers help me understand the project details, the salespeople provide me with the tools and techniques and the management is continually helping me understand an ever changing industry. I never thought after such a short time I could learn so much, but with great teachers how could you expect anything less.

I have very ambitious goals for my future here with this company, but like everyone else I know I have to take it day by day. So to get back to the question of “the typical day”; it is showing up everyday eager to learn, continually building a strong network in and out of the office, taking every opportunity to shadow other employees, being one of the first to work and one of the last to leave, and being adaptable to whatever it is that might be thrown your way.

wire deckingYes, wire decking was covered in a previous post, but it is such an important component of pallet rack that I thought it was necessary to re-inform you, if you will, of the basics of wire deck!

Wire decking is used in pallet rack and other types of storage rack. Made from steel wire, wire decking gives you the flexibility to store a variety of pallet sizes.  It provides a solid surface while also maintaining an open surface which allows the overhead sprinkler system to suppress fires without restriction. Wire decking is easy to install and is maintenance free.

The wire deck is created with welded wire mesh and integrated support channels. The decking sits on top of the beams to create a shelf on which to store palletized inventory. It can be created to accommodate any depth of rack or beam length. It can also be designed for a range of load bearing capacities.

Buying used wire decks can be an extremely easy way to cut down on expenses. Storage Solutions has a large selection of used beams, used uprights, and used wire decks for you to choose from. We specifically store our pallet racks inside our warehouse; that way we can ensure that all of our customers receive the highest quality of used wire decking available.
