As a company, Storage Solutions has been committed to providing our customers with the best in new and used material handling equipment since it all started way back in 1978.  One of the things that enables us to do this is the relationships we have with our partners, including 3D Storage Systems.

Storage Solutions has been proud to partner with 3D Storage Systems for the past several years.  They have grown to become one of the largest producers of dynamic storage systems in North America. 3D offers a wide range push-back products

Our team was fortunate to have a 3D representative come to our facility and teach us some important information about their products.  We thought the information was so beneficial that we wanted to share a few key items with our readers!

Here’s what you need to know…

PUSH-BACK STORAGE SYSTEM

What is push-back?

Push-back storage increases pallet count, while offering many more pick faces than traditional high density storage systems. Each push-back lane is equipped with a pair of inclined rails and a series of carts. The first pallet is placed by the lift truck on the top cart. The lift truck driver then loads the second pallet by pushing back the first load and placing it on the next exposed cart. Pallets three and four are loaded similarly. The last pallet is placed on the rails themselves. When removing product, the lift truck takes out the front pallet allowing the pallets on carts behind it to roll gently to the front of the rack.

What’s the difference between a push-back system and a standard pallet rack system?

A push-back system offers less selectivity than a standard pallet rack system, however, it is a denser storage method that utilizes warehouse space more efficiently because it requires less forklift aisles.

How does the cost of push-back compare to standard pallet rack?

Push-back is a greater investment than standard pallet rack because more components are involved, therefore more material, but the square-footage cost per pallet actually decreases because more pallets can be stored in the space.

We thoroughly enjoyed expanding our knowledge on the push-back system with 3D Storage Systems, and hope this information will be useful to our readers.  If you have any additional questions, our online sales team is standing by! Give them a call at 866.474.2001!

carton flow rackCarton Flow Rack is a form of pallet rack that uses a gravity feed rear load design. One unit is made up of one or more inclined runways.  The cartons are loaded on one side of the system and picked out of the other end. When one item is removed, the item behind it moves forward in its place. The product is rotated on a first in first out basis (FIFO). This system is designed for high volume order picking and reduced operator activity.

Benefits:

  • Lower labor costs
  • Less product damage
  • Better inventory control because items are better organized and easier to locate
  • Similar to pallet flow just on a smaller scale

Third-party logistics companies (3PLs) tend to have complex material handling needs:

  • 3PLs have to consider their customers’ specifications as well as their own.
  • 3PLs have continually changing requirements as new customers are brought on stream, and as existing customer needs evolve.
  • 3PLs may require consistent operational processes in geographically diverse locations, and need to conform to industry-specific regulations.
  • 3PLs often have frequently changing or unpredictable budgets, driven by changes in their customers’ business.

Because a 3PL’s business is fluid and must consider customer requirements as well as its own, it will need to partner with a material handling company that offers more than just an average lineup of products and services. Important characteristics 3PLs look for in a material handling partner include:

  • Strong sales department. A 3PL may want to enlist the support of its material handling partner to discuss features and benefits of various material handling solutions. The job is done more effectively when the material handler has an experienced sales team that is comfortable working as part of a team.
  • Regional and national support. Ideally, a material handling partner covers the same geography as the 3PL, as it makes consistency across locations far easier to achieve and greatly streamlines communication.
  • Commitment. Sometimes the best option for a national 3PL isn’t the biggest of the biggest. A lot depends on the volume of business and specific requirements. Many smaller material handlers are able to support business on a national basis, and may be more attentive than a large competitor with less interest in the business.
  • Flexibility. As touched on already, material handling firms with rigid internal policies will be constantly at odds with 3PLs whose needs are ever-changing. By meeting with the material handler’s executive leadership and operational management, a 3PL can get a good feel for how flexible the company will be day-in and day-out.
  • Creativity. A 3PL quite often needs creative engineering and service support to satisfy its customer’s budgetary and performance expectations. A material handling firm that views problems as challenges, that has an energetic in-house engineering team, makes for an ideal partnership.
  • Stability.  A 3PL’s material handling needs go well beyond buying a few forklifts or pieces of conveyor. The 3PL will need to lean on its material handler for technical advice, sales support, trade-in options, special leasing terms, and a host of other value-added services. Thus, it’s vital that the material handler be financially stable, with a proven track record.

vrc multiplTerm of the Week:  VRCs
Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors, also known as VRCs, move equipment from one level to another. They can move efficiently to a mezzanine, rack/shelving storage system with catwalks, or a new/existing upper floor level. In addition, they are classified as a material conveyor, and the operators do not need OSHA forklift training. They can also transfer pallet loads, carts and boxes that may not fit on a forklift.

Other benefits to VRCs include:

  • Safe to operate
  • Less costly to operate and maintain compared to elevators and forklifts
  • Adjusts to your specific load (height, speed requirements)

pallet rackFor those of you that don’t know, yesterday, Sunday, June 3rd was National Repeat Day (yes, I said Repeat Day). National Repeat Day is a day for everyone to go out and do the things they love over again.  Go fishing for two hours instead of one, ride your bike in the morning then again in the evening, or eat your favorite dessert twice!

Well, one thing we love here at Storage Solutions is pallet rack, so to celebrate Repeat Day we are re-posting a previous Term of the Week blog.

This week’s re-term of the week is Pallet Rack!

Pallet rack is a structural storage system that is used to support high stacking of items or palletized loads. This storage system is designed to store materials on pallets.

There are many types of pallet racking but all types allow for the storage of palletized materials. In order to use the pallet rack system you need to have access to forklift trucks so that you can place the loaded pallets onto the racks for storage. Pallet racks are an essential element in most modern warehouses, manufacturing facilities, retail centers, and other storage and distribution facilities.

We use many types of pallet racking in our own warehouse. We also buy and sell new and used pallet rack beams and used pallet rack uprights.

If you are in need of pallet racking make sure to check out the clearance section of our website for more product availability, or contact our online sales team at 866.474.2001, and one of our knowledgable team members will be able to help you get what you need!

As I reflect on the results of this year, the request for a blog submission from our marketing department was timely.   While evaluating the accomplishments of 2011 and establishing new goals for the upcoming year – I am challenged to figure out what has attributed to our success, what lessons were learned, and how to best position ourselves moving forward.

Every year I find myself looking back to past years thinking that a historical trend might develop.  The only development is the reassurance that change is a constant with us.   I’m amazed that what seemed like minor changes at the time, and just part of going about the business at hand – turned out to be more significant when looking in the rear view mirror.  I know better than to think that it will ever be “business as usual” for us. We get bored too easily!

If we started all over (like we seem to do each year) the key ingredients would stay the same:

Adaptability – one of our strongest assets since the beginning
Visionary
 – we look at the world and warehouses a little differently
Entrepreneurial – we pride ourselves on our creative spirit
Energetic Action – the challenge of “making it happen” is contagious
Loyal – our clients and vendors are partners

The true grade card is the feedback we get from our best partners. The quotes “you make it look easy” and “no one else in the country does what you do” are indicative of the Storage Solutions mission statement.

If we are able to focus on that level of service and commitment – everything else will follow and expectations will be exceeded once again in 2012!
