In this day and age, green is practically a part of everyday life.  Whether we’re driving smaller cars, drinking from glass bottles instead of plastic or recycling instead of just tossing everything into the trash, our culture is becoming more and more aware of the impact we have on the environment.  The thing that’s easy to forget is that making things “green” reaches past the things we do on a personal, day-to-day basis.  That’s why we thought it was important to create an infographic all about SUSTAINABLE WAREHOUSING!

The infographic shares ways warehouses can become more environmentally friendly, while also lowering operating costs. It includes statistics about warehouse energy usage, and simple ways to recycle, reuse, and reduce. Small measures can make a BIG difference in warehouses!

We’ve got quite the list of projects to showcase these days.  So we’re going to take you down to Texas, where we installed nearly 600 pallet rack bays, over 800 rack bins and 300 feet of guardrail space.

Project Dallas Week 1

Aspects of the project:

  • 598 Rack Bays
  • 810 Single Level Rack Bins
  • Approx. 300’ of Guardrail Installed
  • Approx. 160,000 Sq Ft. of Warehouse Space
  • Incorporated Both New and Used Racking Components

Why use Used Racking Components?

Not only will you save money on your warehouse redesign, but you are helping the earth by buying used materials as opposed to new. You might also find the other advantage of our equipment buy back program useful as buying from our used equipment section can help you save even more!

Take a look at our green initiative.

Check back next week to keep track of the progress on Project Dallas!

SPRING IS HERE!  Well… it was.  And then temperatures dropped 40 degrees and now we’re freezing again.  But we’ve got faith that warmer weather is headed our way again any day now.  Along with spring’s arrival, we as a company have decided to take a hard look at what it means to be green and take the environment into consideration as we head into warmer months.

Storage Solutions GreenWhen it comes to going green, not only do we look to make greener decisions within our daily office functions (we’re talking more emails, recycling paper goods, ride sharing and fewer printouts), but we also pride ourselves on providing customers with opportunities to make more environmentaly-friendly business decisions.

What Are We Doing?

There are plenty of ways, both large and small, that we are aiming to contribute to having a more positive impact on the world.

  • Shipping Via Railway
  • Selling USED equipment
  • Ride-Sharing To And From Project Sites
  • Recycling Paper Products
  • Print Less, Email More

SHIPPING VIA RAILWAY

While it is certainly not always going to be the cheapest option, rail cars can provide a very competitive price for some shipments.  Storage Solutions has managed to save companies thousands of dollars on freight costs by shipping via rail. Check out our previous blog posting for more info on the benefits of shipping via railway.

  • Railroads are three times more fuel-efficient than trucks
  • Railcars move freight without clogging freeways
  • Railcars emit only 2.6% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emmissions, while truck account for 21% of that total

Selling Used Equipment

Purchasing pre-owned equipment is the most surefire way to have a positive impact on recycling. While companies often shy away from the “used” label on some steel products, used pallet rack can be just as effective albeit more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly.  Check out a previous blog posting on the benefits of buying used equipment.

As far as the rest goes, we’re constantly looking for additional ways in which we can lessen our impact on the environment.  Using less paper, increasing our reliance on technology as a main way to communicate, sharing rides to and from job sites nationwide and more are way in which we are trying to do our part to be an environmentally-conscious company.

go_greenIn recent years, many companies have been jumping on the “go green” bandwagon.  While it is promising that so many companies have shown an increase in awareness and resolve to opreate in a more environmentally friendly manner, sometimes it is just not financially feasible to do so.  Luckily, there are some business decisions that will keep both the environment, and your company’s bean counter happy.

Using rail cars to ship equipment can save money, and is often times a more environmentally friendly alternative to shipping via tractor trailers.  While it is certainly not always going to be the cheapest option, rail cars can provide a very competitive price for some shipments.  Just recently Storage Solutions managed to save roughly $18,000 on freight costs by shipping via rail.  However, sometimes the best reward is knowing that your business decisions are helping to make the earth a better place.

Here are a few stats that illustrate how shipping by rail can help your company be green!

  • In terms of fuel efficiency, railroads are three times more fuel-efficient than trucks
  • Railcars move freight without clogging freeways
  • Railcars emit only 2.6% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emmissions, while truck account for 21% of that total
